SPMT 194 - Introduction to Sport Management

This course is an introduction to the field of sport management. Career options and managerial content will be reviewed. Foundation studies of sport, including history, philosophy, and professional skills, will be discussed. This is a Theory and Technique Course.

Coursework

1. Career Plan Paper: before beginning this assignment I developed a list of career aspirations and goals in the sport industry. Afterwards I reviewed my goals and developed a list of steps and or requirements for me to achieve my career aspirations. I review this paper when I need an extra boost of motivation.

2. Career Interview Project: this project required that I reach out to professionals in the sport industry to request for a personal interview either over the phone or via email. This helps me understand and practice how to represent myself professionally and to develop relationships. The final project included a paper with interview evidence along with presenting the project and what I learned to the class.

3. Volunteer Experience Project: requirement to complete a minimum of five volunteer hours related to sport and to write a paper reflecting the experience.  I volunteered with the Special Olympics of Western Pennsylvania (SOPA) as a bocce referee and scorekeeper. This experience alone turned into an opportunity to work as a member on the Event Management Team as the Volunteer Coordinator, I held this position for two years and currently take pride in being the Co-Director for the 2013 Special Olympics of Western Pennsylvania, Fall Sectional.
